Great Old Amusement Parks

Rick Sebak's documentary takes an unashamedly nostalgic look at the grand old amusement parks of America, charming and beautiful attractions where families gathered in their thousands for a cool escape on hot summer days.

Featuring old wooden roller coasters, vintage bumper cars and many other classic rides, the programme rolls back the pages of American cultural history to explore the special nature of the parks and their continued popularity. Sebak uncovers some amusing history and investigates why these amazing parks continue to bring people together and keep them coming back. Mixing historical footage, old postcards, vintage music and new footage, Sebak traverses the country to create this delightful scrapbook. The locations visited include Playland in Rye, New York, Holiday World in Santa Claus, Indiana, and California's Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk, where holidaymakers can still reach for the brass ring on the famous Looff Carousel, installed in 1911 and still in immaculate working order.

Despite the advent of the giant theme park and its computer-controlled thrills, many of these traditional attractions continue to thrive, serving their communities as a gentle reminder of a more innocent age.
